Top 5 Pretty Dishes I Ate – Food Around the World!
Pretty dishes deserve credit! I again scrolled through my life from 2012 until now to give you the prettiest dishes I ate. Inspired by my previous post, I wanted to share more food travels. So here I list the top 5 prettiest dishes that I’ve had as far as I remember.
5. Fall Dessert, Sushi Kimura (Singapore)
This fall designed dessert was a wonderful end to my Raku Omakase meal at the one star Michelin restaurant Sushi Kimura in Singapore. This plate has a simple and elegant look. I ate at this restaurant in November of 2018 where Singapore was the first country I landed during my 2 months South East Asia trip. Aligning the dish with the season and the the use of an autumn leaf though I couldn’t eat the leaf made the dish very pretty. I’m Canadian maybe that’s why I liked this dish and it brought a smile to my face when I saw it. The white inside the bowl is tofu on tops if pickled plum (umeboshi). On the sides are cookies that compliment the strong flavour of the pickled plum.
I also ate a lot of scallops in this restaurants because it was a la carte of 50 SGD after the omakase meal. Very affordable and also had an awesome female chef. This omakase experience was really good that it could have made my Top 5 Fine Dining experiences but I left it as a runner up.
4. Carrots “Pastrami”, Rose’s Luxury (Washington, D.C., USA)
The carrots “pastrami” dish of Rose’s Luxury in the Barracks neighbourhood. D.C. specifically DMV (D.C. – Maryland – Virginia) area (not Department of Motor Vehicles – the hated of the two lol) will always be in my heart. I spent a good three years of my life there so I pretty much enjoyed eating out and exploring the cultured and historic neighbourhoods of the state without a representative. Also, this restaurant is highly-acclaimed in the D.C. food space. I mean, President Obama celebrated his birthday here so you know it got reputation.
Carrots Pastrami served with smeared smoked butter at the bottom and garnished with some pretty petals on top. Pastrami in the name probably because of the smoked taste of the spices used in the carrots and the butter. The oval-shaped smear was super precise like the chef didn’t even make a mistake putting it on the plate. Bright yellow petals compliments the white sauerkraut and green herbs. Also the brightness of the orange carrots on the white plate made the dish stand out.
3. Banana & Caramel Pancake, Pompompurin Cafe (Tokyo, Japan)
This dish made it to my list! I know I know. It’s actually more on the cute side but it’s very well presented and accurate. When you’re in Japan, you should definitely go to a themed cafe. They are very popular in Asia and there are some outside Asia too but Japan has a lot. Whatever interest you have, I’m pretty sure you can find a themed cafe in the country.
Banana & Caramel Pancake is a popular dessert at the cafe. It’s the Sanrio character Pompompurin constructed using banana, caramel, pancake, and other sweets on a plate. That itself is art and eat the dog on the plate. Anything that I would have ordered in this cafe would have made my list.
I’m a very flexible traveller and thankful for my friends who knows this kind of stuff so I went along to go to this cafe with them. Pompompurin Cafe is located right on one of the busiest streets in Tokyo pre-covid of course: Takeshita Street in Harajuku. This cafe is an official Sanrio cafe and it’s a chain so you can eat this cute dish outside Tokyo.
2. BisQuit Tiramisu, Q-pot Cafe (Tokyo, Japan)
Also in Japan, this pretty dish served at Q-Pot Cafe in the quiet Aoyama neighbourhood. Mainly because of the plate. The dish itself is simple but with the plate. It looks very pretty. My tiramisu turned into a fancy cream necklace worn by the lady on the plate. Very smart way of using the plate and positioning the dessert.
My friend also ordered a necklace but with a berry macaron instead. Everything in this cafe is kawaii and also very elegant. I should asked who supplied their plates so I could buy and make my desserts pretty at home too.
The space itself was very elegant with sample foods of macaron cakes on the table. You can hangout for a long time. They have free wi-fi perfect for working and it’s very quiet too. Enjoy your pretty dessert. Be high on sugar while grinding through the day.
1. Coconut Milk Ice Cream, Rose’s Luxury (Washington, D.C., USA)
Last but not the least is the Coconut Milk Ice Cream dessert – another one from Rose’s Luxury (President Obama knows what’s up). I could not believe that this was a dessert from the look of it. It looked to me like a home decor or sample food to be honest. It was very pretty with the petals on top. I didn’t know if they were edible or not. Probably were and ate a couple while scooping the coconut ice cream. It was really nice and colourful.
For you friends with dietary restrictions, it is very dietary friendly because it’s dairy-free, vegan, and very delicious so you won’t miss out. Who would have thought this was ice cream. Even I didn’t.
