5 Highlights of My Awesome 2 Days Trip in Prince Edward Island
After spending 2 days in New Brunswick, next stop was the beautiful Prince Edward Island. I took the driver’s seat and headed towards the smallest province of Canada by land. The drive to and on the island will be in my list of most memorable road trips. At the top along with my Fairbanks Anchorage Alaska road trip and to Arthur’s Pass in my New Zealand Australia trip.
This is the part of my one week trip in the Maritimes provinces where I was the designated driver. I drove into, around, and out of the island which means passing through the Confederation Bridge. This is the bridge that connects the island to mainland Canada and the longest bridge of the country! Keep in mind there’s a toll fee when you go through the bridge collected when leaving the island. The fee is determined based on your type of vehicle.
The island’s capital, Charlottetown, is where we spent most of our time though we also drove island the island’s scenic spots close by. This cute tiny island was really super fun to explore and has really amazing coastal drives! I’m going to share with you the highlights of my Prince Edward Island 2 days trip filled with fun, sweets, history, and seafood!
1. Ice Cream Love at Cows Creamery
Cows Creamery is the pride of Prince Edward Island. Well, the province is famous for other things (like potatoes) but if you’re an ice cream lover like me. this should definitely be on your list when you visit Prince Edward Island. In fact, my friends and I couldn’t wait so we stopped by the first Cows we saw which was at the end of the Confederation Bridge!
2. Downtown Charlottetown
We stayed at a hostel right in downtown so we were able to walk around, stop at historic landmarks, and learn about Canadian history. Prince Edward Island is rich in Canadian history. A lot of political events happened here and there are many signs on the streets that explains the historical buildings and figures.
The famous Charlottetown Conference 1864 happened here that lead to the creation of Canadian Confederation. ‘Birthplace of Confederation’ is their license plate slogan which I think way cooler that Ontario’s ‘Yours to Discover’. The conference took place at the Province House which is at the intersection of Great George St and Grafton Street.
Downtown area is manageable by foot and make sure you walk through the streets of Victoria Row and Queens Street. There’s a very pretty old church St. Dunstan’s Basillica in the heart of the city. There’s a waterfront park and explore Peake’s Quay, a marina for dine and shop.
3. Everything Anne of Green Gables
Drive 40 minutes away from Charlottetown to Cavendish for a Canadian Victorian heritage experience. Anne of Green Gables is very popular Canadian novel by Lucy Laud Montgomery about Anne and her adventures in the fictional town of Avonlea in Prince Edward Island. The author lived in the town called Cavendish. It is where the Green Gables Heritage Place is located where you can see Anne’s life in the Green Gables home. I was surprised to learn that this novel is really famous in Japan so many visitors come from that country. They really love this novel that it’s actually even though in schools. Many signs and explanation in the heritage place were in Japanese. It was a nice and amazing experience to see Prince Edward Island Victorian era. Walk along Haunted Wood trail that is referenced in the book which loops around and also connects the Heritage Place to L.M. Montgomery’s Cavendish Home.
There are so many destinations, activities, celebration for this novel all over the island so you should definitely do something that relates to Anne. Since I was already in Cavendish, I checked out the town itself and the Cavendish Beach.
4. Seafood at Row House Lobster
Seafood is the best dining option when one the oceanside country coast. Caught fresh and served as the catch of the day on the menu is what I ordered mostly in this trip. One restaurant I enjoyed the most was Row House Lobster in downtown Charlottetown. My friends and I were here in the summer so we are patio dining style. They have great selection of seafood dishes in their appetizers and mains that it’s a crime not to get at least one seafood dish.
Try the Lobster Poutine which even uses PEI potatoes from their fries, share the Island Blue Mussels with friends, Cioppino for all seafood, and the PEI Lobster Roll.
5. Coastal Scenic Drives
One of the favourite things I did in this trip is the drive. Travel by car is the best transportation to see the island and enjoy the amazing scenery. As I already mentioned, I was the main driver for this trip and I took my friends to Cavendish and other small coastal towns that we passed by while driving. Roll out the windows and feel the fresh sea air breeze as you drive.
